"BE A PART OF A FAMILY"

But even in those developed places there were times when people in vehicles could easily throw rubbish out of the window. About two years ago, Ashesi cleared the dumpsite in the berekuso village that was decades old.

A few months after that, weeds started to grow on the land and people started dumping rubbish on the land even though a huge container was placed there while others defecated on it. The whole place started reverting to its old state. At that point, it became clear to us that the whole reason boiled down to the habit of improper waste disposal.

As individuals who like sports and therefore play volley, football, basketball, table tennis among others, anytime we went down to the town to play football, we saw the kind of passion that the youth have for sports. They will never miss a football game, they will also arrive on time and can sacrifice major things just to play football. Around the same time of these observations, there was a piece of land used for defecation and rubbish at Ashale Botwe which was converted into a soccer field by some young men. Thus I saw an opportunity to provide a solution to the one thing that makes me so angry, which is improper waste disposal, using the one thing that not only I enjoy doing so much but every other youth (sports).

Armed with this realisation and the passion to determine methods of properly dealing with waste while providing the urban poor with access to healthy sanitation, we started the TranSite (Transform dumpsite) community project.
